On Oct. 2, Houston’s Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Service sent a joint delegation of 10 representatives to Galveston to assess the short-term and long-term needs of the island’s Jewish community affected by Hurricane Ike. Published 02.OCT.08 As Hurricane Ike rolled in from the Gulf of Mexico, the Seven Acres campus became a shelter for those who needed a place to settle down in safety, as well as a place for staff to be housed while caring for nearly 300 residents. A staff of 130 and their families, which included 25 children, volunteers, resident family members and other guests, moved into the building on Friday afternoon, Sept. 12, before the storm and stayed for several days afterward. This included special-needs adults, who remained until they could return home. More than 25 pets also were sheltered in the back hall of the building.
