By MICHAEL C. DUKE 01.JAN.09 Hundreds of Houstonians, mostly Arab and those politically aligned with the extreme left, organized a series of local demonstrations to protest Israel’s defensive airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, known as Operation Cast Lead.
Israel launched Operation Cast Lead on Dec. 27, 2008, to curtail Hamas rocket attacks against Israel, which had greatly increased since the Palestinian terrorist organization refused to extend a six-month cease-fire with Israel on Dec. 18. Some residents have opened their windows; others have removed them completely to keep the glass from shattering while Israeli jets pound Hamas targets in Gaza. The streets remained deserted.
